Upon arrival on Tuesday the 15th of May I reported to the make shift station #2 on the south side of town.  There I received a turn over from F.F. Wendel and a quick tour of the town.  I was advised that I would be partnered with Hutchinson Fire and we would be the Fire Protection for the south half of Greensburg.  The first assignment handed down from the Station #2 Battalion Chief, was to report to the Dot building.   At the Dot building we would inventory the equipment on the damaged fire apparatus from Greensburg and Kiowa County fire departments, and determine what was usable.  The usable equipment was then transferred to a truck that was temporarily donated by the Leawood Fire Department.  Also, the Greensburg Rescue truck was put back into service during this time to respond to any extrications and/or rescues throughout the county.

Throughout my visit our main objective was to assist any resident needing help.  For the most part people had collected their salvageable belongings and moved on.  However, there was an overwhelming amount of the elderly and disabled population that had no way of salvaging.  At times Command put us on at type of patrol or circulation to look for these people.

One of the bigger jobs of the fire crews was deluging asbestos filled houses while being demolished.  During this assignment T121 was stationed at the cities dry hydrant due to being one of two trucks able to pull a prime.  The other trucks either did not have the adapters to fit or were mechanically unable to.  After the first day of performing this job it was terminated by the E.P.A.

I was assigned to do many other jobs from sun up to sun down.  The days were filled with hard, but rewarding labor.  The meals provided were outstanding and the other necessities were doable.  We were held to a very high hygiene standard, which made everything livable.  So far in my career, this has been an unequivocal experience.  I’m glad that I fell into the right place at the right time to be selected to go.  T-121 performed great, (minus a dead battery once), and a lot of people seemed pleased with it’s capabilities.  District #1’s presence was noticed.
