Windswept flames heavily damaged a Johnson County corrections center under construction, a Shawnee apartment complex and a Northland home Monday.

The worst damage was near the New Century AirCenter in Johnson County, where a building that is part of an $11.5 million construction project caught fire about 1:40 p.m.

The 232-bed facility was a month from completion. Fire consumed a significant portion of the roof, and the interior sustained heavy water damage, County Manager Mike Press said.

When the fire broke out, about 20 workers with Building Construction Enterprises of Kansas City were at the site. No one was injured. Wind gusts of up to 36 mph contributed to the damage. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
