Truck Fire on Icy Day January 17, 2007

This truck was used as a storage unit that was pulled into some trees off the road. This fire was difficult to get to because of the icy roads and the location of the delivery truck.

Extrication July 17, 2006
On July 17th 2006 units from Fire District #1, Fire District # 3, Olathe Fire Department, and Johnson County Med-Act responded to a report of an Injury Accident.  When units arrived on scene they found a large lumber delivery vehicle which had left the roadway and overturned, pinning the driver of the vehicle.  Crews work for 45 minutes in 100 degree temperatures to free the trapped victim.  The rescue was especially challenging due to the unstable load of lumber the truck was carrying, and the manner in which the driver of the truck was entangled.  Several hydraulic rams were utilized, along with spreaders, cutters, and various other extrication equipment.  Once extricated, the driver was transported to an area hospital by LifeNet helicopter.

Rope Rescue Training
Capt. Phelps and FF McDowell attended a Rope Rescue Technician 1 & 2 class from CMC  training in rope rescue fundamentals, focusing on high- and low-angle rescue techniques.  Subjects we covered were knots; anchors; patient packaging; mechanical advantage systems; belaying; lowering systems; rappelling; knot passing through rappels, raising and lowering systems; system safety factors; litter rigging and tending; pick-offs; and stretcher evacuations.  The practical applications were based off real case scenarios.

Burn Trailer - Training
Fire District #1 members participate in several different training scenarios utilizing the University of Kansas' mobile live burn facility. This facility allows for live fire exercises that prove invaluable to our members.
Furniture Warehouse Fire
This fire occurred in October of 2000. The warehouse you see had large amounts of furniture, mattresses, and carpeting. This made it a particularly difficult fire to extinguish!
Automobile Accidents
Fire District #1 responds to a wide variety of injury accidents. Here you see an example of some of the damage that can occur during these traumatic events.
Plastics Manufacturing Company Fire
First arriving companies encountered heavy fire involvement in this June 2003 plastics plant fire. Eight different departments responded to this $600,000 dollar loss to the community. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
House Fire - 151st Street
The cause of this fire was thought to be electrical. The effort to extinguish this fire was hindered by the age of the house. It had many additions over the years which caused a great many hidden spaces which this fire found. The home was a total loss.
House Fire - 159th and Dillie Road
Fire District #1 units, along with Fire District #3, Gardner Fire Department, and Fire District #2 Rural responded to this house fire in the area of 159th and Dillie Road . First arriving units found smoke and fire coming from the attic area. Firefighting efforts where hampered by 15-20 MPH winds, and difficulty accessing the attic.
Johnson County Jail - New Century, KS
This multi-million dollar loss was caused by workers welding in the roof area. The roof construction of this county building was unlike any we had seen. There were hundreds of natural void spaces in the roof which made this fire nearly impossible to quickly extinguish. It took eight fire departments and over 80 people, nearly 36 hours to bring this fire to a conclusion.
