We have three shifts (A, B, C) that consist of 2 Battalion Chiefs, 5 Captains, 1 Lieutenant, and 14 Firefighters.
Fire District #1 of Johnson County covers 200 square miles of area in northeast Kansas. We currently protect around 40,000 residents and that number is growing due to the new BNSF Intermodal and Logistics KC Park. Along with covering cities and rural territory, FD1 is a certified wildland operations department where members can be deployed across the United States to assist in major events.
In 2023, Fire District #1 responded to over 4,900 fire and EMS calls. Our area is getting busier and our department is making strides to always ensure the best coverage and protection possible for our residents and businesses.

Fire District 1 is proud to announce that on November 1st of 2017, we reduced your ISO rating to a 2/10.
What is ISO?
ISO is a complete analysis of the structural fire suppression delivery system provided in your community. The scale used is a 1 thru 10, with 1 being the lowest (best) rating and 10 being the highest.
The new 2 classification will improve the predictive value for insurers while benefiting both commercial and residential property owners.
What does the 2/10 mean?
The 2 represents any dwelling within 5 road miles from any of our stations which is around 80% of our district. The 10 represents any dwelling outside of the 5 road miles (northwest corner of the district).
What do I need to do?
We suggest that you contact your Insurance agent and let them know the ISO rate has changed. Most Insurance Companies use the ISO as one of the factors that determine your rate. The changes usually occur upon your renewal date.
There are right at 500 fire departments in the State of Kansas and only 16 have an ISO rating of 1 or 2. This a great accomplishment for Fire District 1 as well as the cities of Gardner and Edgerton as we all continue to grow.
